Oh, The Irony, The Irony

Good morning, I'm not at school because it's raining; yes I said it, it's raining, in Alaska, in January! We've gotten 50 inches of snow or more, it has been 20 below zero for weeks, and there was never a thought of cancelling school. Now, we're a moose hair above freezing and it's raining, and school's cancelled.  I thought only Kentucky cancelled school when it rained. 

We, as Alaska residents think nothing of school being open after a foot of snow, hence, we think lower 48ers are weaklings when it comes to winter weather and school. I guess all of that sentiment has come to the 49th state.

Since we have about two inches of hard pack snow on the roads, including the highway, when it rains, it looks like a zamboni driver has been joyriding all over town, creating a nice uniform rink for drivers to slide to work. It took me an hour to get one square mile: to the highway, to the next exit, and then back home. According to the radio, a city bus was northbound on the Glenn Highway and is now perpendicular to the highway, and across all three lanes, while there are four or five cars strewn across the median for a backdrop. Come to think of it, there was a car laying on its driver's side door, perfectly balanced, in the median yesterday. One more notable: people were attempting to use an exit and were sliding back down the ramp--rear end collision in reverse, I suppose.

So, the moral is: rain and snow kills; if you have to drive, idle all the way to work.
